Diagnosing Father’s Diabetes
Chris’s father, Amon (65), was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about five years ago and has a history of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity.
When his mother died 2 years ago, Amon wanted to remain independent and refused to move in with him or his sister. Since then Chris has been his father’s primary carer whilst also managing a part time job and small family.
Chris helps Amon attend his medical appointments but when he can’t his sister will normally help. Recently, Amon had to go to hospital because of a urinary infection and an enlarged prostate resulting in Chris and his sister having to take turns to attend appointments. It was challenging when they in turn had to communicate to different doctors what had been going on with their father and didn’t have all the details to hand.
They had thought at the time that it would have been useful to have Amon’s medical details in a central place that Chris and his sister could jointly access.
His sister Zara worries about her father’s health a lot and will often call her sibling to ask how well Amon is managing his conditions.
Seven ways Chris uses Healthbit to care for her father
It can be challenging
Dealing with appointments and helping people manage their daily health can place a huge emotional and physical stress on carers.
Healthbit helps carers maintain information centrally for the person they are caring for so it’s easily available when required, saving time. This information is easily shareable with other family members so that they can also play an active role, or it can be shared directly with a doctor.
Carers can create their own account, so that they too can take care of their own health and wellbeing a well as the health of others.
They can also connect with other carers to share their experiences and support one another.
